“Cheap Like a Kosher Bakery…”
April 4, 2007
I have coined a new phrase: “Cheap like a kosher bakery the day before Passover.” Use it liberally, boychicks and girlchicks.
On a block of Grand Street around Essex and Norfolk Streets, in New York’s Lower East Side, there’s a kosher bakery, a bialy shop, and a doughnut shop. An entire block that won’t be getting business from the Jews this week. Except for people like my half-Jewish friend who asked the bialy vendor, “Are bialys kosher for passover?” The response made him ever more irreverent, so he walked into the kosher bakery next door and asked “is there anything I might bring to a friend’s seder?” She said no, but since it was the day before Passover, everything was half off.
